Leader's Guide

Day 1 - Getting Started

This meeting is designed to familiarize learners with their digital camera or photo-taking device. It includes a presentation on using digital cameras, a scavenger hunt where 4-Hers take photos using different features on their camera, and computer lab time where 4-Hers use a tutorial to learn how to download their images to the computer and do basic editing. "On their Own" after the meeting, they select and prepare their 5 favorite photos to post to online photo sharing site or social media during the next project meeting.

Day 2 - Photojournalism

The session begins with an opportunity for learners to post their five favorite photos from the previous meeting online after doing a tutorial on using the web-based tool. Leader then gives a presentation on photojournalism. The group should then go on a "news shoot" together, preferably to a community event such as a show or farmer's market. (if the group cannot attend an event together, this would be an excellent assignment for 4-Hers to do "on their own.") On their Own, learners dowload and edit their photos, preparing them to post online in the next session.

Day 3 - Digital Darkroom

Learners begin by posting their best news shoot photos to a photo sharing site online. Then, learners have the ability to develop their digital darkroom skills in this lesson by doing tutorials on creating a slide show in Album, and doing more extensive editing work on the photos in Photoshop Elements. On their Own, 4-Hers continue to edit their photos, preparing five before-and-after selections to share at the next meeting.

Day 4 - Fine-Tuning

4-Hers post their before-and-after selections from the previous meeting online and share them with their peers. With basic editing and photography skills under their belt, 4-Hers begin to develop both skills through a presentation on taking better photos, then review existing photos and analyze how they could be improved. On Their Own they take photos demonstrating strong composition rules.

Day 6 - Finding the Best

Learners post their best portrait photos online. The leader gives a presentation on judging photos and offering constructive criticism to peers. Learners do a tutorial on how to critique others' photos, then spend lab time critiquing online photos. On their Own, 4-Hers prepare a portfolio of their photos to share with others – and continue posting their own photos online.
