Inspiring the students to get excited about learning can be a difficult chore, but now I know how to do it. All I have to say is, "Field trip!" The activity focused on local history. The project started with a field trip to Old Mesilla to learn about the history. Local historian, John Sandin, was the tour guide for the trip.

The students took notes and asked questions from people in the community. A group of students took digital pictures and video. When the field trip was completed the students returned to the classroom to put together a virtual walking tour of Old Mesilla.

Students were divided into groups and given a specific tasks. One group was in charge of putting it into html and the remainder of the groups divided up the various different historical sites in the town. When the tour was completed, it was put on the internet for all to learn and enjoy.

The class utilized many aspects of technology to make learning more interacting and rewarding. The students had become producers of information for the internet not just consumers. They all felt wonderful about giving back to the net. This project can be done by any school. Every community has history which can be researched and shared. This is a great way to tell the world your communities historical values.
