Going on a Ghostly Trip can be Grueling

Ghosts are grueling topics around our community. Much of our history is based on these ghostly stories. In order to get students to learn about the history and give them a purpose to write, I decided to use this to my benefit in the classroom. The students knew enough to have a basis of what we would be doing in the classroom, so they were excited.

The first thing we did was to visit four sites which supposedly had ghosts present. Yes, this meant a field trip! At each site a person from the community met us and told us about ghostly encounters and the history of that particular location. The students took notes, video taped, and took digital pictures.

After the visits, the students were divided into four groups. One group wrote a book, Ghostly Tales of the Past; another group made a video about the history of our community; group three developed a web page,

and group four developed a hyperstudio stack. All of the students made up their own ghost story using some historical information and taped it on to a cassette.

The students presented their final projects to parents, friends, administrators, and the community with pride. It was a learning experience that received a S.T.A.R. award. Thank you USWEST for making this possible.
