Objective:
This is an integrated lesson that uses the word processing and paint programs
in ClarisWorks. Then the two projects are combined to one page using the
cut and paste options in ClarisWorks. This lesson was done with 3rd, 4th,
and 5th graders but it would be appropriate for any age level student who
is being introduced to ClarisWorks. This lesson could be done in one day
(a few hours) or over several computer times.
Procedure:
Have the students write up a paragraph or two that describes their back
yard to the reader. These are to be descriptive paragraphs (you could incorporate
a mini lesson on adjectives and adverbs. Then have the students type it
up on ClarisWorks, save it on their disk and print out a hard copy. (You
will need to do a brief intro. lesson on the word processor.) Then have
the students draw a picture of their back yard and color it - first on
drawing paper and then have them do the same picture using the paint program
in ClarisWorks. (Again, you will need to do a brief intro. lesson on using
the paint tools.) They are to save and print out this picture. Then show
them how to cut their picture and paste it into their word processing document
- and print them out together on one page.
Evaluation:
This proved to be a very powerful lesson because it combined the how
of using the computer with the why. The students learned how a computer
can be used to replace everyday tools such as pencils, scissors, crayons,
etc. as well as how to use those tools. It integrated the writing process
with and art project using a theme that the children can readily relate
to; their own back yard.
