Integrating Language Arts/ Artistic Design with Technology
This activity can be done over the course of a week, month, or longer. The length of the project depends on the depth you wish students to explore and the skills your students have using HyperStudio. My students had NO HyperStudio skills when we started but they made it through!
First, have students make a Contents card. This way they can add to their stacks and have a single card to link to right away. Now students can take off making cards about their family, themselves, etc. My students made cards for each of the following:
1. My Family- Contains names of their family and can be as fancy as the students want to make it.
2. Mom - Has a poem or info. about Mom. What she likes, pictures, or whatever students want to include about Mom can be included here.
3. Dad - Has a poem or info. about Dad. What he likes, pictures, or whatever students want to include about Dad can be included here.
4. Sister/Brother - Has a poem or info. about sister/brother. What she/he likes, pictures, or whatever students want to include about sister/brother can be included here. (This can be several cards if students have multiple siblings.)
5. Me - Has a poem or info. about the student. What he/she likes, pictures, or whatever students want to include about themselves can be included here.
6. Family Poem - This was an acrostic poem about what "Family" meant to them.
Each card has a button linking it to the Contents Page.
Why Do It? Students enjoyed working on this project over a period of several months. Because their HyperStudio skills were nonexistent at first, it was frustrating for them so a little dose seemed better than immersing them. Each week or so we could do some writing in class that had something to do with our Family stack. When we got to lab we could use what was already written, type it in, create, and design cards instead of using tech. time to think of what to write.
Students learned many useful skills including importing text from ClarisWorks, manipulating clip art, and just figuring out how HyperStudio works. We are hoping to have a time for parents to come in and see our projects.
Helpful Hints:
1. This type of activity could be used for reports on a variety of topics ; famous people, animals, colonies, etc. Let your imagination go and be creative.
2. Text was easier for students to type in a word processing document and then import it into HyperStudio.
