Common name: HORSE LUBBER.
Size: 38-64 mm.
General distribution: Arizona, E. to Texas, S. to Costa Rica.
Distribution in New Mexico: Dona Ana, Grant, Hidalgo, Luna.
Habitat: Desert grassland and creosote desert.
Host: Shrubs, forbs, grass, carrion; cannibalistic.
Adults Present: August-November.
Notes: Large, short-winged lubber; black with yellow or orange markings; tegmina with network of yellow veins; hind wings rose-red with black borders; hiss when disturbed; often seen crossing highways; males can fly. Occasionally destructive, but feed mostly on desert shrubs.
