Virginia Tech Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

"Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellowship Program in Natural Resources and Environment"
- Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA

Contact: Dr. Andrea Dietrich,
Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech,
e-mail: andread@vt.edu

Virginia Tech Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, in conjunction with other environmental programs at Virginia Tech, is recruiting BS or MS students for an interdisciplinary program to train Ph.D. students in the areas of Land Use and Water Quality, Natural Resource Policy Design and Analysis, and/or Water Quality & Ecological Monitoring and Assessment. Potential research areas include source water protection; TMDLs; geographic information systems; fate and transport of E. coli, agrochemicals, or nutrients; impacts of land use on water quality; long-term changes in water quality. The fellows will receive a $22,000 stipend, tuition (about $6000/year), and $500 travel expenses per year for up to 2.5 years. Stipend add-ons for qualifying students and the possibility of a $10,000 grant for international research are also available . Students may enter the Ph.D. fellowship program with either a B.S. or M.S. degree and must be US citizens or national residents.

This project is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through CREES. A uniqueness of the program is that fellows work on an interdisciplinary project that involves many faculty and research areas, as well as participate in an internship with an outside agency. All applications will be reviewed by a committee composed of representative faculty from all four disciplines - Civil and Environmental Engineering, Agricultural and Applied Economics, Biological Systems Engineering, and Entomology.

Qualified individuals with background and interest in the sciences, engineering, economics, policy or related fields are encouraged to apply. Those interested in applying for a USDA fellowship at Virginia Tech should contact Ms. Sherry Burke (phone: (540) 231-4595 or e-mail: sbburke@vt.edu) or Dr. Andrea Dietrich (email: andread@vt.edu) for more information and application materials. Prospective students are also encouraged to visit our departmental site at www.ce.vt.edu/program_areas/environmental/index.htm.
