The Jose Fernandez Memorial Chair was established by the Enrique Chavez Family in recognition of his contributions to the New Mexico State University and the agricultural community. Income from the endowment is used to provide resources in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Science to a faculty member who is engaged in research by experimenting in developing new ideas in field crop production.
Joe Corgan in 1994 released the "NuMex Jose Fernandez Onion variety" to recognize the contribution of the Jose Fernandez family to the farming activities in the Messia Valley of New Mexico.
