Bernalillo
NMSU, Sandoval Master Gardeners to host eight-week gardening series
Sandoval County Master Gardeners, in conjunction with New Mexico State University's Sandoval County Cooperative Extension Service, is hosting an eight-week series on the many aspects of gardening in the Southwest.

The Southwest Homeowners Series will begin Feb. 5 and offer a class each Thursday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. through March 26. The classes will be at the Sandoval County Extension office in the Old Courthouse in Bernalillo, 711 S. Camino del Pueblo.

Attend individual classes or the entire series. Cost of the series is $40 or $5 for each individual class.

The schedule of classes includes:

    • March 5: "Seed Starting," presented by Lynda Garvin.
    • March 12: "Vegetable Gardening," presented by Loren Meinz, Master Gardener
    • March 19: "Insect Pest Management," presented by Tess Grasswitz, NMSU Integrated Pest Management specialist.
    • March 26: "Preserving the Fruits of Your Labor: Food Preservation Basics," by Nicole Lujan, NMSU Sandoval home economist and 4-H agent.

Free Kitchen Creations cooking class
This 4 week cooking school is designed for people with type 2 diabetes.

Learn to plan and prepare meals that help manage diabetes. Participants receive a free manual and cookbooks. Classes will be held Tuesdays from 5:30 8 8:30 p.m. as Ruidoso High School, 125 Warrior Rd.

Alcalde
Fruit tree pruning workshop at NMSU Alcalde Center
New Mexico State University’s Sustainable Agriculture Science Center at Alcalde will host its annual fruit tree pruning workshop from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 4. The center is located at 371 County Road 40 in Alcalde.

The workshop will include presentations on pruning basics, common training systems and some new development for each species. There will be a hands-on session in the field after the presentations.

NMSU to host first Albuquerque conference on emergency preparedness in the home
New Mexico State University’s Southwest Border Food Protection & Emergency Preparedness Center and Bernalillo County Cooperative Extension Service will present a free emergency preparedness in the home fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the Sheraton Albuquerque Airport Hotel, 2910 Yale Blvd.

Workshops during the day will address these time frames, as well as prepare the individuals and their household for unforeseen emergencies, such as how to develop a food and water supply for the household and the importance of having financial and medical documents available for a quick evacuation.

The New Mexico State 4-H Dog School was designed to help youth and leaders become familiar with the 4- H Dog Project, the different events youth may participate in with their dogs and to promote Responsible Dog Ownership.

State 4-H Dog School is two and a half days of workshops and presentations to help develop leadership, selfreliance, sportsmanship, a greater understanding of their dog and citizenship responsibilities by working together to support community dog projects and activities. 4-H members between the ages of 9-19 may attend Dog School, along with leaders, agents and parents.
