John Wenzel, DVM

Dr. John Wenzel has been the Extension Veterinarian for New Mexico State University since July 2006. In this capacity he works closely with various private organizations, state, and federal agencies and research institutions on veterinary issues and serves as the coordinator for the New Mexico Agriculture Livestock Incident Response Team (NM-ALIRT) program. This team is responsible for local response as a first responder in the event of a livestock disease outbreak and is considered a nation model. Dr. Wenzel is also a driving force in creating a livestock Syndromic Surveillance program in New Mexico, which is being developed for national use. Dr. Wenzel is also the owner of Arenas Valley Animal Clinic in Bayard, NM which is a mixed animal practice. Dr. Wenzel is the author or co author of numerous publications and is a highly sought speaker across the state and nation on emerging livestock response organization practices. He is also an active participant in organizing and executing emergency response exercises, including international exercises with the six Border States in Mexico, and is credentialed at the ICS 400 level.
