MEETING LOCATION: To be determined.
NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:
This will vary throughout the year. Volunteers or team volunteers will be needed to:
- Teach classes for Master Gardeners on How to Save Seeds,
- Teach classes to the public on Growing Seeds, Gardening Basics, etc.
- Help store seeds, in the late summer,
- Package seeds in the spring.
BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Master Gardeners will be saving seeds from successfully grown plants from the Southwest. We will start with vegetables such as tomatoes, beans, etc. The seeds will need to be cultivated, cleaned and stored over winter. These will be placed in seed packets which library card holders from the Esther Bone Memorial Library will be able to "check out" using their library card. The number of seed packets a card holder can check out will be determined by the number of seeds donated. The purpose is to help the public begin to start heirloom plants from seeds, save their seeds and replant next year.
MAIN EDUCATION/TRAINING PROVIDED:
- How to Successfully Save Seeds,
- Why Save Seeds,
- How to Germinate Seeds,
- Seed Collecting Strategies,
- General Gardening Tips.
