Thursday, August 27
Today volunteers in the WWG raked and swept paths; planted iris donated by a MG. We pulled weeds in the Buffalo Meadow areas. Volunteers covered drip lines and poly that was exposed, mainly Ollie and Otto.
Ed cleaned out the east end of the dry creekbed today and it looks beautiful.
Volunteers noted the progress of trees in the Mediterranean Garden over a 2 year growing period.
There was discussion about up coming tours, community projects and the Rio Rancho Children's Water Festival we have been asked to participate with.
Trek for Trash is September 26 ~ 8 am - Noon with free access to Landfill that day. WWG volunteers will do our Trek for Trash on Sept. 24 (Thurs) during our normal workday in the garden.
The City of Rio Rancho Water Conservation Department and Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful will have a community outreach for WaterWise use on Sept 19. (9-Noon) at the City Offices (by the event center)
Thanks to Becky the brochure boxes in the WWG are filled.
Otto's sweet peas, gladiolus and marigolds are blooming wonerfully in the garden this year. Thanks Otto for sharing your seeds and bulbs with the WWG.
Thursday, August 20
Ollie was at the garden very early with Otto there too raking paths. Ollie scraped squished grape matter from the pergola area, walk & benches.
Becky collected material for boxes from Marian and refurbished the brochure information on Wednesday since she was not able to make Thursday's workday. Thank you Becky ~ there were a lot of visitors this morning including some people collecting grapes to take home!
Ed, Otto, Warren, Bruce, Charlie worked on irrigation pipes and got them unpludgged and covered up once again. That area in East Mountain looks great.
Diana brought a couple of agave to plant in Veteran Path area. Thanks Diana they look great!
Margaret, Anne, Beth, Diana and Linda with Warren's supervision pulled sand burs and knapweed from the Buffalo Meadow sections of the garden.
Anne, Margaret Beth and Linda looked for more places to plant agaves while checking on status of the slope planting in Upland Forest.
The Olla Garden in Land Ends looks fantastic! This was a fun project that all the volunteers check on regularly and give feedback.
Oh, and Warren modeled the latest 2009 version of the KRRB T-Shirt with Charlie modeling the 2008...the model for 2007 was missing!
Ruben and Sue gave us Garden information for the week and Ruben got the last drop of coffee.
It was a very complete day in the garden and alot was accomplished.
Thursday, August 13
SCMG & volunteers had an unusually cool, cloudy morning for garden work.
Ollie covered poly and drip excavated lately by RR looking for leaks, etc. Becky and Ollie cleaned off Grape Arbor area from all the ripeded grape mess on chairs and sidewalks.
Loren raked and releveled some paths where gravel had settled unevenly.
Ed cleaned up tumbleweeds and other noxious plants in Land Ends garden.
Diana pulled weeds in the Buffalo Meadows & Sky sections and save some nice blue stem grasses from a haircut today!
Elizabeth gave us hollyhock and bird of paradise seed for the WWG and SCMG spread this today. Some of the seeds were distributed in the SSCAFCA drainage area.
Noted dry areas of garden and sent information to RR Park Director as requested by RR Park Director.
Found interesting ground wasp nest by Healing Garden.
All trash and debris collected for disposal.
Thursday, August 6
Otto swept and raked the paths and has this project just about finished when Charlie & I arrive about 8 am. SCMG looked for spider mites that might have returned on evergreens in Upland Forest garden.
Collected and spread holly hock seed.
Said Good-Bye to the Fat Albert Spruce that just looked too pitiful so it was unanimous to cut him down and clean up the area; Ed did the deed and the Upland Forest looks much better.
Anne, Nancy, Diana and Linda weeded knapweed, sandburs and dandelion out of the Buffalo Meadow gardens.
During coffee had a discussion about silky thread grass and how the fly catchers were gathering the seed head clusters for nesting material. Ed said gardening is more than just the plants; it’s learning by seeing the wildlife that enjoys the fruits of our labor too.
Also discovered that Pinon Trail is not getting adequate water near Veteran's Walkup and front parking lot.
