Ann Bock is a tenured, full professor of human nutrition in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Home Economics at New Mexico State University (NMSU). She has been at NMSU for over 22 years. She came to NMSU from Kansas State University where she got her doctorate in Human Nutrition with a minor in Physiology. Her Masters was in Institutional Management and Dietetics and her BS in General Family and Consumer Sciences. She completed a sabbatical at Purdue University during 1999. Dr Bock is a Registered Dietitian. She is licensed in New Mexico. In addition, she specializes in nutrition support.
In addition to her faculty role, Dr Bock is the Director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) at NMSU. In this capacity, she works with all of the dietetic students to insure that they have taken the course work necessary to meet the requirements of The American Dietetic Association. She also works with students when they put their application packages together to get in a supervised practice program which is another of the steps required to become a Registered Dietitian.
Aside from being faculty and the Director of the DPD, Dr Bock has a 60 percent research appointment with the New Mexico State University Agricultural Experiment Station. Her research concentrates on nutrient bioavailability, nutrition education with a special focus on distance delivery and nutrition support aspects of minerals, fiber and lipids. The major minerals of interest are calcium and iron.
As a faculty member at NMSU, one of the components of the job is service. Dr Bock does service in a number of arenas. She does nutrition support work in both acute care and the community nutrition arena. She regularly speaks to various health professionals (e.g. physician, dietitian, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and pharmacists). In addition she has lots of practical, personal experience associated with many of the topics covered in class. In January 2002 she underwent a Roux en Y Gastric Bypass and to date has lost 133 lbs.
Ann Bock taught ballroom dance for years and still likes to keep in practice. She loves to do crafts, especially those related to floral arrangements and decorations. She also likes to travel. Naturally she loves to concentrate on the food and cultural aspects during her trips.
