Family and Consumer Sciences

  • Recruitment Event: Roselyn Smitley and Dr. Melinda Chavez, Recruitment Event Clothing, Textiles, and Fashion Merchandising faculty members, met with 40 students and two teachers from Hanks and Bel Air High Schools on January 28. Dr. Chavez and her CTFM 476 students presented their fashion design projects. Dr. Smitley spoke on fashion merchandising and textiles, and then took students to view sheep at the NMSU barn to learn more about wool.

Cooperative Extension Service

  • National Western Round-up: New Mexico 4-H teams from Chaves, Dona Ana, San Juan, and Santa Fe Counties competed at the national level at the National Western Round-up in Denver last month. The Chaves County Home Ec Bowl Team placed second overall and had the first and fifth high-point individuals. Dona Ana County won Reserve Champion as a team in the Parliamentary Procedure contest. The San Juan County Family and Consumer Science Skill-a-thon Team placed third overall, third place in the Life Skills Assessment, and had the fifth high-point overall individual. The San Juan County Hippology Judging Team placed third overall, and had the second and seventh high-point individuals. Santa Fe County's Consumer Decision Making Team placed fifth overall and had the second high-point individual. The NMSU- CES County Extension Agents work tirelessly to help the teams prepare for these contests.
