LAS CRUCES -- Onesimo "O.A." Martinez began work Dec. 2 as the Extension associate on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation.
Martinez will coordinate both agricultural and 4-H programs with the Jicarilla in Rio Arriba County. He has been working with Extension on a temporary basis since May.
"My main goals are to work with livestock producers to make their operations more productive and to involve more kids in 4-H to help build their self-esteem," he said.
A Canjilon native, Martinez participated in New Mexico 4-H activities for several years growing up.
Before joining Extension, Martinez was a survey technician for the Bureau of Land Management, working out of the Santa Fe office.
In 1991, he earned a bachelor's degree in agronomy from Oklahoma Panhandle State University with minors in natural and animal science. He attended college on a rodeo scholarship and served as rodeo team vice president. He was a member of the rodeo team and collegiate rodeo association for four years.
His hobbies are fishing and hunting.
