LAS CRUCES -- New Mexico's 1997 4-H ambassadors and diplomats were chosen during the state's 4-H Senior Leadership Retreat in Albuquerque recently.

The eight young people were selected based on interviews and written applications. During the interview, they also were given a group project to plan the state 4-H conference and select a theme. From this exercise, they were judged on their ability to interact and work in a group setting.

Ambassadors represent New Mexico at the national 4-H conference in Washington, D.C. They also conduct the Senior Leadership Retreat, help with the state 4-H conference and conduct county and state leadership workshops, as needed.

Diplomats represent New Mexico at a recreation laboratory in California where they learn new recreational and educational programs. They are responsible for recreational activities at district 4-H contests, the state 4-H conference and at county and state leadership workshops.

Both groups help conduct tours at the New Mexico State Fair and attend the annual electric camp, partially sponsored by New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service.

Selected as ambassadors were Jennifer Cordova, Bernalillo County; Deborah Dictson, Curry County; Dynelle Kortz, Santa Fe County; and Will Waller, Chaves County. Betty McCreight, Lincoln County Extension 4-H home economist, will serve as their advisor.

The new diplomats are Lorna Brown, Dona Ana County; Darcy Buchman, De Baca County; Beth Knipprath, Bernalillo County; and Melissa Morris, Bernalillo County. Lee Loney, Otero County Extension home economist, will serve as diplomat advisor.
