LAS CRUCES -- Cotton growers and producers will learn about insect management and control during the annual New Mexico Cotton Conference Feb. 18 at the Las Cruces Hilton.
"In New Mexico's cotton industry, yields are high and prices are good this year," said Shane Ball, agronomist with New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service. "Many insects have steadily been establishing themselves in the area, however, and could seriously affect crops in the future. The goal of this conference is to bring together producers, processors and anyone else interested to focus on controlling insects."
The conference will include seminars on boll weevil and pink bollworm control and a report from the Mesilla Valley Pest Management Association. Speakers will discuss Mesilla Valley water issues and weed management in cotton. Also, an update will be given on the latest developments in cotton breeding. Registration, which begins at 7:30 a.m., is $25. For more information, contact Shane Ball at (505) 646-7999 or Javier Vargas at (505) 525-6649.
