LAS CRUCES -- New Mexico State University's National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA) chapter was named the second best student chapter in the nation at a recent competition in Nashville, Tenn.
NMSU's chapter has consistently earned top honors since it began three years ago. It won outstanding developing chapter in 1995 and national outstanding student chapter in 1996. NMSU placed second to the University of Wisconsin-Madison this year. About 35 chapters competed.
"As a chapter and as representatives of the university, we showed that we are consistently strong from year to year," said Cynda Clary, assistant professor of agricultural economics and agricultural business and NMSU/NAMA advisor.
The chapter also received two innovative idea awards for chapter management and career development. The awards added $600 to the chapter's bank account.
Both the chapter and innovative idea awards were based on a year-end-review book, compiled by Holly Armstrong, of Gallup, and Cohee Boyd, of Melrose.
NMSU took 25 students to the week-long national conference and marketing competition. "We were very visible since we helped out the national NAMA office during the week," Clary said. "Many people approached me and commented on the friendliness, professionalism, and enthusiasm of NMSU students."
