LAS CRUCES -- Byron Wright began work June 1 as an agricultural specialist in wildlife with New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service animal resources department.

Wright, a Ruidoso native, worked as a temporary employee for two years in this position. During that time he assisted with environmental impact statements, developed teaching materials for wildlife curriculum and worked with 4-H youth programs related to wildlife. In addition to continuing these duties, he will coordinate state 4-H and FFA wildlife contests and conduct impact studies on elk in New Mexico.

Wright received his bachelor's and master's degrees in wildlife science from NMSU in 1995 and 1997, respectively. His master's thesis focused on comparisons between fee hunting enterprises on public and private ranches in New Mexico.

Wright also has experience with research on mule deer in pinyon-juniper habitat and the impacts of wildlife and livestock on aspen regeneration.

Wright is a member of the Dona Ana County Associated Sportsmen and the North American Hunting Club. He is an honor graduate from the New Mexico Department of Corrections Police Academy where he received a marksmanship award.

He will begin his doctoral studies in range science at NMSU this summer.
