LAS CRUCES - Robyn Kowice and Christopher Morris, students in New Mexico State University's hotel, restaurant and tourism management (HRTM) department, were recently awarded scholarships for the 1999-2000 academic year.
Kowice, a junior from Casa Blanca, N.M., won the 1999 Hyatt Hotels Fund for Minority Lodging Management Students Scholarship. Kowice will receive $2,000 for the upcoming academic year and a plaque.
Morris, a junior from Las Cruces, received the 1999 National Council of Destination Organizations Scholarship from the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA). He will get $3,000 for the 1999 fall semester. The formal presentation of the award will be held during the TIA Foundation's Marketing Outlook Forum in October. Morris will receive an all-expense-paid trip to the meeting in Pittsburgh, Pa.
"Both of these scholarships are very competitive," said Deborah Breiter, interim HRTM department head and associate professor. "These students were in a pool of the best students from universities across the United States."
