Assessing Broad- Scale, Field Level Evapo- transpiration, Crop Coefficients, Economic Prouctivity, and the Dynamics of Depletion in New Mexico's Mesilla Valley

Project Description: This Project will Expand on Previous research that identified parameters affecting water efficiency and economic returns from water in agriculture in Mew Mexico's Mesilla Valley. A validated ET model will move from research to application and utilization in order to address current critical water issues in New Mexico's lower Rio Grande Basin. The research will address concerns at the local and state levels on ground- water depletion. The objective is to extend the model to all major crops produced in New Mexico's Mesilla Valley. The results of this applied research will provide detailed information on crop consumptive use, crop coefficients, and water resource tradeoffs in an area experiencing rapid population and economic growth, as well as an increasing competition for scarce water resources.
