Melanoplus desultorius (Rehn)

Common name: Red Whiskers Grasshopper.

Size: 20-27 mm.

General distribution: SE Arizona, SW New Mexico, and Sonora, Mexico.

Distribution in New Mexico: Hidalgo.

Habitat: Desert grassland.

Host: Various composites, such as Franseria, Ambrosia, and Haplopappus.

Adults Present: July-November.

Notes: Short-winged, with blue hind tibiae. Male cerci slender. Not economically important.
