School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism ManagementPersonal and Professional Tips
In lieu of recent circumstances, adjusting to making life in our homes as comfortable and safe as possible is increasingly important. Our faculty and staff would like to contribute to providing helpful resources including food safety fundamentals, some of our favorite recipes, and useful other tips that we utilize to make the most of this time working, learning, and cooking at home.
Food and Food Safety
4 steps to food safety is a great, recently updated, resource on the basics of food safety. Particularly the table labeled "Safe Storage Times chart" provides great information on how long things are expected to keep, and what to freeze, and what will not freeze well. As many have bought in bulk, and utilizing all the available resources and reducing food waste this is a valuable tool.

Are you at home with your kids and need a simple recipe that they can assist with? These are tested, used, and recommended by Moms we know, and simple enough that little hands will enjoy being part of the process.

Are you assessing the pantry staples that you had on hand and what to do next? Allrecipes has a great tool called "Ingredient Search" that will help you find recipes that include what you have on hand and even gives the option to exclude ingredients you may not have or don't prefer.
I also found suggestions from one of my favorite celebrity chefs, Ina Garten, aka the Barefoot Contessa that are highlighting some of her suggestions.

Don't forget the importance of staying in touch with your co-workers, friends, and family, and more importantly, have some fun! We are all in this together and staying connected is crucial to passing the time in positive spirits and keeping perspective. In the years that I spent working long distance from friends, significant others, and family one of the ways we would spend time together was choosing a show or a movie, and agreeing to a time to begin watching and texting throughout. Being able to react and laugh, and have something in common to discuss was a great way to keep in touch and make time watching tv that much more enjoyable. Luckily, Netflix has created a feature that makes this simple with Netflix Party. But whether you happen to have the same blu-ray, or any other streaming device pick a time, and make it a date or a group chat.
Here are some other ideas on how to have virtual or digital meetings or parties.
If You Love to Read
If you are tired of digital, try book clubs. I have done book clubs through e-mail more than I have in person. Pick a book, a group, and choose one person to help facilitate discussion questions. Many books have discussion questions available to take the work out of it for you. Here is a more in depth resource and a generalized one. Adapt them to your group to encourage discussion.
