NMSU, Sandoval Master Gardeners to host eight-week gardening series
Sandoval County Master Gardeners, in conjunction with New Mexico State University's Sandoval County Cooperative Extension Service, is hosting an eight-week series on the many aspects of gardening in the Southwest.

The Southwest Homeowners Series will begin Feb. 5 and offer a class each Thursday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. through March 26. The classes will be at the Sandoval County Extension office in the Old Courthouse in Bernalillo, 711 S. Camino del Pueblo.

Attend individual classes or the entire series. Cost of the series is $40 or $5 for each individual class.

The schedule of classes includes:

    • Feb. 5: "Fruit Trees for the Home Landscape," presented by Elizabeth Gardner, Master Gardener arborist.
    • Feb. 12: "Building Desert Soils: The Foundation for Successful Gardening," presented by John Zarola, Master Gardener and master composter.
    • Feb. 19: "Gardening in Drought Conditions," presented by Curtis Smith, retired NMSU horticultural specialist and Southwest Yard & Garden columnist.
    • Feb. 26: "Plant Selection for High Desert Gardening," presented by Margo Murdock, Master Gardener.
    • March 5: "Seed Starting," presented by Lynda Garvin.
    • March 12: "Vegetable Gardening," presented by Loren Meinz, Master Gardener
    • March 19: "Insect Pest Management," presented by Tess Grasswitz, NMSU Integrated Pest Management specialist.
    • March 26: "Preserving the Fruits of Your Labor: Food Preservation Basics," by Nicole Lujan, NMSU Sandoval home economist and 4-H agent.

Composting Comprehensive Workshop

Workshop Schedule

  • 9:00 am to 12:00 pm - Home Composting Basics and Soil Amending.
  • 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm - Composting With Worms (Vermicomposting).
  • 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm - Bucket Composting With the Bokashi Method.

The workshop will be help at Sandoval County Extension Service Classroom, 811 S. Camino del Pueblo, Old County Courthouse, Bernalillo, NM.

Composting with Worms (Vermicomposting)
The class, sponsored by Bernalillo County Extension Master Composters, will cover the art, science, materials, methods and benefits of home composting with worms.
