How To Be A Master Gardener

To become a member of the Colfax County Master Gardener program, there are a few steps you must take.

  1. Take the Master Gardener classes. Presented by various specialists from NMSU, these classes cover a wide variety of topics (soil, irrigation, trees, lawn, insects, and more). The classes are every Tuesday afternoon for 14 weeks starting in March and finishing in June.

  2. After you have taken the classes, each year the participates must complete a number volunteer work hours and Continuing Education Training hours.

  3. Most Important-the following must apply! A love of gardening. A desire/curiosity to learn more about gardening and all the comes with it - the good and the bad. A good sense of humor. Time - whether you have a lot of time on your hands or just a little, you can find a garden or garden project that fits you and your life.

Master Gardener Projects

Colfax County Master Gardeners have a number of projects they head up or help other groups with around our area. Here are a few!

Chase Ranch gardens- The Chase Ranch is a historical ranch located in Cimarron, NM, Master Gardeners have helped the Philmont Scout Ranch bring the gardens back to their former glory. They continue to help maintain & grow the garden each year. Currently, the two groups are working on revitalizing the ranch's fruit orchard.

Main Street Flower Barrows- Working with Grow Raton, the Master Gardeners plant flowers in decorative barrows in front of businesses in the downtown Raton area. During the winter months, they place tasteful pine cone arrangements in the barrows for a bit of holiday cheer.

Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge- The Master Gardeners helped the staff of the Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge to plant a garden next to the Refuge's visitor center.

Other projects- Arthur Johnson Memorial Library flower beds (Raton). Raton Senior Citizen Center flower beds (Raton). And more to come!

Events County Master Gardeners Participate In!

Colfax County Health Fair - Annual Health Fair last Thursday in April 9 AM - 3 PM

Master Gardener members have a vendor table each year to show case gardening & it's health benefits, as well as the importance of bees, etc. to our environment and health. Master Gardeners also help with the event registration tables & set up.

Farmer's Market - Summer Farmer's Market on Historical First Street in Raton, NM. Each Saturday during the summer months, 1 - 4 PM.

Master Gardeners have a vendor table for the season to educate attendees on gardening & it's benefits.

Colfax County Fair & Rodeo - Colfax County Fair & Rodeo in Springer, NM. First whole week in August.

Master Gardeners have a vendor table for the season to educate attendees on gardening & it's benefits. Members also help with the Indoor Exhibits.
